About Red.es
Red.es is a Public Business Entity under the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function, operating through the Secretariat of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence.
Its functions are legally established in the Sixteenth Additional Provision of Law 9/2014, of May 9, the General Telecommunications Law.
Red.es promotes and develops the Digital Agenda. Additionally, it manages various programs for the development of the information society in coordination with other public administrations and national, regional, and local public organizations.
A significant part of Red.es' activity is funded through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), co-financed by Spain’s Multi-Regional Operational Program (POPE). Similarly, Red.es promotes projects funded by the European Social Fund (ESF), co-financed by the Youth Employment Operational Program (POEJ) and the Operational Program for Employment, Training, and Education (POEFE). These initiatives aim to foster employability, youth skills, and training tailored to new business models and the digital industry. Since 2021, Red.es has also managed funds from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), a temporary recovery instrument known as Next Generation EU.
The entity’s activities are structured through various programs, initiatives, and workstreams aimed at the digital transformation of public administrations, businesses — with a special focus on SMEs and micro-enterprises — and society at large. These efforts seek to promote and foster economic growth and job creation through Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
Red.es' initiatives drive digital transformation based on ICT by developing projects and programs to enhance the adoption of new digital processes in public services, such as the development of smart cities and territories, e-health, and digital education.
Additionally, Red.es implements programs to boost the digital economy, innovation, entrepreneurship, and training for both young people and professionals. It also supports SMEs by encouraging the efficient and intensive use of ICT.
Red.es includes the ONTSI (National Observatory of Technology and Society), whose primary objective is to monitor and analyze the 2025 Digital Agenda and digital policies. Furthermore, the entity serves as the national authority responsible for managing domain name registrations under the country code “.es.” Moreover, Red.es manages RedIRIS, the advanced communications network for Spanish universities and public research centers, enabling them to access advanced connectivity and ICT services necessary for remote collaboration with institutions in different cities and countries.
