Opportunities and challenges of non-terrestrial networks for global connectivity

Roundtable organized by UPM focused on the impact of new low Earth orbit satellite constellations with Direct-to-Device capabilities and their potential to reshape global mobile connectivity. Drawing on early commercial deployments and emerging evidence, the discussion will examine how these solutions can extend coverage to remote areas and strengthen critical communications in emergency scenarios, while addressing key challenges related to integration with terrestrial mobile networks, spectrum management, capacity scalability, quality of service and regulatory frameworks. Bringing together academic, industry and regulatory perspectives, the session will provide a balanced analysis of opportunities and risks, exploring the real role non-terrestrial networks may play in building a more resilient and universal telecommunications ecosystem.
